AI Can Build a Website. Why Do You Still Need a Web Developer?

Without a shadow of a doubt, AI has changed the way websites and software are built. Something that took weeks of development can now be generated in a matter of minutes. But, it still begs the question: If AI can build a website for me, why should I still hire a web developer?

Up until now, most businesses were faced with choosing between an agency, a freelancer, or an internal dev team to get the job done. Now, the rise of AI-powered website builders such as Wix, Squarespace and GoDaddy have brought a fourth option into the mix. In just a few clicks, you can build, deploy, and launch a website with minimal effort and budget. For some businesses, especially startups, that might be enough.

However, an “OK-ish” site doesn't mean you will automatically build a lasting online presence, attract visitors, or even convert them. A good website needs to be fast, secure, accessible, and maintainable to do what it needs to do. AI can help with a lot of that, but it can’t take responsibility for everything. That’s where you need a human web developer.

In this blog, we’ll break down how AI is changing web development, where it’s genuinely helpful and where it falls short to help you make better decisions about your next website or app.

AI Has Changed the Way Websites are Built

According to the 2025 Stack Overflow Developer Survey, 84% of respondents are using or planning to use AI tools in their development process. By now, that number is probably closer to 90% with the evolution of the technology over time.

AI-driven tools have transformed development processes, taking efficiency to the next level. It can generate HTML, CSS, and JavaScript code, create content assets and SEO elements, explain errors, while providing debugging suggestions. This removes a lot of repetitive work, giving developers more time to focus on delivering the best digital experience possible.

For those who are learning to code, launching a new business, or early in their dev career, it also allows them to test ideas, create prototypes, and get a basic version of a website or app running in front of people—all without needing to understand every single line of code behind it.

However, there is a huge difference between creating a polished, professional site and building something that’s tailored, intuitive, and actually works as intended for your business, and most of all, your audience.

An AI-Built Website Isn’t Necessarily a Good One

While AI website builders can pull together layouts, imagery, and a couple of paragraphs to create a beautifully designed site, what they lack is the creative and strategic aspect of web development.

On the surface, it can turn ideas into visuals, but these are often based on a combination of pre-existing templates and data fed into its system. It lacks the ability to interpret the nuances of a user’s journey or the logic behind your business, resulting in a fairly generic site.

Understanding why a user landed on a particular page and how to guide them to take a specific action, whether it’s submitting a form or making a purchase, is a vital aspect of problem-solving. The same goes for your business operations. Your website might need to connect to your CRM, handle complex enquiries, require custom functionalities, or support different types of users on the same platform.

And then there’s asking the right questions that AI does not consider:

  • Is the site accessible across all devices?
  • Can it load quickly?
  • What colour palettes or typography reflect your brand’s tone?
  • Are the team able to make changes as priorities shift?
  • What happens when a third-party service goes down?

When you work with a web developer, all of these elements are intentional to create a site that is truly yours. That is where real human experience matters.

Where to Draw the Line on AI-Powered Web Development

AI is genuinely useful. But on its own, it can’t match the insight, knowledge and experience of a human. AI tools can suggest a solution, but a professional web developer assesses whether it is the right one for the wider project.

The simplest way to look at it is:

AI excels at:

  • Generating and adapting code quickly with tools like GitHub Copilot
  • Creating prototypes and testing ideas
  • Finding potential bugs and suggesting fixes
  • Spotting performance bottlenecks with predictive monitoring
  • Explaining unfamiliar code or technical concepts

Human expertise excels at:

  • Understanding business, its objectives, and users
  • Choosing the right technology and approach
  • Planning how different systems and integrations should work together
  • Thinking about how something will be maintained and developed over time
  • Taking responsibility when something doesn't work as expected

Human + AI = The Future of Web Development

So, what does the future hold for web development? It is very unlikely that AI will replace developers in total.

The best use of artificial intelligence isn’t asking it to build an entire website then walk away once all is done. By making development faster and more efficient, we can think bigger, do our jobs better, and keep the experienced people involved where judgement counts.

The Office for National Statistics reports that 71% of UK firms use at least one AI technology, so it should be treated as any other tool.

At Built by Pixel, we’re always researching, experimenting, and testing for the next phase of growth. Like any project, we start by understanding the problem, work out the right solution and then agree upon the best tools to build your website or app, using AI where it makes sense.

Because every business is unique, your platform deserves to be too. If you’re curious about the possibilities of AI technology, or future proofing your website, we’re happy to talk through them openly.
